How to start a kombucha business

Let me guess, you make the most amazing kombucha at home? And you are thinking about turning it into a business? 

Whether you want to sell at a farmers market, online, delivery or to restaurants, cafes and grocery stores, kombucha is fun and in-demand product to bring into the market.

First, ask yourself if you really want to be an entrepreneur - this will require you to stretch yourself outside your comfort zone and do things you have never done before.  You will have to feel "out of sorts" and face your fear, doubt and worry head on and do take action anyways. 

 

It isn't for everyone. And its ok if it isn't for you. There are so many ways to share your delicious beverage with people in your circle that don't require you to start a business.

A kombucha business requires working out of a commercial kitchen, regular testing and a full HAACP (food safety) plan.  

While this isn't the easiest of businesses from a licensing and manufacturing standpoint, there is demand and awareness. 

This product type is not a good fit for copacking. Be prepared to self-manufacture. 

Any packaged food business will require an investment because you have to provide all the inputs to create a product up front. 

A kombucha business will require specialized equipment, licenses, testing, additional food safety plans, refrigeration storage, FDA compliant labels and more expensive packaging. 

While the market in certain cities is pretty saturated, there is always opportunity for a local brand to get a foothold and be successful. Customers are also educated on what kombucha is and its benefits.
